How to Find Your Music Genre

Figuring out your musical genre can be tricky, especially if you have trouble defining yourself. If you listen to a variety of music genres regularly, you may find yourself thinking you’re a rocker or a hip-hop artist yet can’t seem to pin down a specific genre. If you’re unsure which music genre you best fit into, fear not. You can use a few simple methods to figure out which is the best you identify with.

Music is such a wonderful way to connect with other people. Whether it’s catching up with a friend, dancing, or listening to your favorite song, listening to music is a universal joy. Learning about your music genre can help you connect with others who share the same interests, so learning what music genre you fit into doesn’t have to be hard.

Tips On How To Find Your Music Genre:

Determine What Music You Like The Most

Everyone has a favorite type of music, making listening to music enjoyable. However, not every song you love has a genre that describes it. If you are looking for information about a song that is playing on the radio or that song you are listening to, chances are you are searching online. The music industry is constantly changing, and as artists continue to release new music, our often-limited knowledge of genres is outdated.

Figure Out Your Personal Music Style

When thinking of music genres, we often ask ourselves what type of music we like. The answer isn’t always as simple as we might like to think, but figuring out your personal music style isn’t hard. We all have at least one thing that we enjoy doing, whether it’s sport, music, art, cooking, or something else. Most people who know me know that I am an avid music lover.

Find What Brings Memories To You

Music is very personal. It affects our emotions, memories, and state of mind. We all have favorite songs that make us feel a certain way, happy, sad, or nostalgic, and that’s because music genres are rooted in feelings and memories. It’s partly because when we listen to music, we also let ourselves be distracted, relaxed, or excited. And afterward, we might think back on the songs we listened to and associate some memories with them. Music also teaches us about history. Songs about slavery, for example, can be found in genres like jazz, rap, hip hop, etc. In fact, they are at the very core of the genre. They can evoke a lot of emotion in you.

Try Every Music Genre

Some music genres are more creative than others. One good way to do this is just to listen to the song, then draw a visual of what you think it looks like, what instruments you hear, and what type of feeling it evokes

Fans of music genres such as hip hop, heavy metal, country, jazz, classical, or rock will rejoice at learning that no matter your musical preference, you can still get a handle on what your “musical personality” is all about. The key is to listen to every type of music genre (or sub-genre) you can get your hands on and pay attention to how each genre makes you feel.

Types Of Music Genre

Pop Music

Pop music is a type of popular music that developed commercially in the U.S. during the mid-20thth century. Its development was influenced by the folk music revival of the 1960s. Pop music is characterized by sentimental ballads and an upbeat rhythmic beat. It is generally classified as easy listening and has featured many singers and songwriters.

Rock Music

Rock music has been entertaining people for decades. It was epitomized by the band The Beach Boys, but the genre has never stopped evolving. Next to hip-hop, rock is among the most popular genres among youth. Throughout its history, rock has produced many talented musicians. Rock music has gone through many transformations since it first emerged in the 1960s. Yes, there is still plenty of loud and rocking music out there, but heavy metal, new wave, alternative, and indie rock are some of the biggest current genres.

Country Music

Country music has been around for a long time, with artists such as George Jones, Loretta Lynn, and Hank Williams Sr. making country music a household name. And the music has evolved since then. Now, many artists are pop-influenced, compared to traditional country artists. It’s an expanding genre with a big following and grand stadium concerts. Today, you have to be fast to get Morgan Wallen tickets, or any other country music concert tickets for that matter. It may be that country might just become your genre.

Hip hop and Rap

Rap music is a style of music created by African Americans in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It was developed as a form of socially conscious musical expression by young African Americans in New York. While widely associated with hip hop, rap music encompasses various styles, including hyphy, mumble rap, hood rap, party rap, street rap, etc.

Music genres may seem arbitrary at first. Still, there are deeper, underlying reasons why people create music. I listen to music without any genre in mind, whatever I feel like listening to that day. Take a deep breath. Close your eyes. Imagine your ideal vacation.
